Ethnic origins The white population accounts for 70.5% of the total. The mestizo population accounts for 20.9% of the total. The Afro-Caribbean population totals 8.0% of the total. According to the United States census, the population of Spanish origin is the most abundant in Puerto Rico, with 70.5% of the population. Afro-Caribbean people are found especially in the municipalities of Loíza and Río Grande. The mulatos and mestizos are found throughout the island, but they abound more in the center and north. Whites are found throughout the island as well, but they abound more in the west and in the metropolitan area. The Asian inhabitants are very few in general. Other ethnic groups and cultures also appear mixed.
